Add value to your research through a number of Elevator Talk services.
Following the success of Carolyn Gale's initial Elevator Talk workshops, Elevator Talk has been expanded to offer additional services to add value to your time investment.
In each session, you will work with novel techniques that cover a range of issues in the writing and speaking process - from assumptions about your audience, to peer reviewing and oral presentation techniques. Depending on your particular need, topics covered can include:
- Interpersonal and public speaking techniques
- Understanding assumptions researchers make about their audience
- Identifying and demystifying jargon
- Clarifying the impact of your research
- Prioritizing results and oral presentation techniques
- Peer reviewing
Other topics include learning how to adapt to various audiences, and using metaphors and analogies for clarity and effective description. Each session is time-efficient, focused, and casual, with participants developing greater confidence during informal conversations with professional and personal contacts.
The following services were developed by bringing together the most requested aspects of Elevator Talk, and can be easily customized depending on group size, preference for written or oral activities, and expected target audience.
90 minutes
This entry-level offering is best for groups of 30 or more and is the foundation of the Elevator Talk system. Participants in this session will learn about the issues concerning communicating research, write a paragraph that describes their research, and practice delivering the paragraph orally with group feedback. The deliverable at the end of this workshop is a one-paragraph, 30-60 second “talk” which explains specific research and its importance to a general audience. Many participants use these results in proposals, the media, and even at parties.
Half Day
An expanded version of the 90-minute offering with a maximum of 24 participants/instructor. Participants in this session develop both written and oral Elevator Talks, and receive group and instructor feedback. Audience analysis, developing metaphors or stories, and further peer reviewing issues are also covered.
All Day
This offering builds on the half-day session by formally introducing peer reviewing, along with two rounds of feedback. An added benefit to the one-day seminar is that participants will be introduced to the ‘Hallway Talk’ concept, which expands the 30-second Elevator Talk to a 500-750 word statement, or 3-5 minute presentation.
Additional Offerings
Both Elevator Talk and Hallway Talk courses are adaptable programs that are also offered as intensive two and three-day seminars which allow scholars additional time, resources and support to hone their skills and present their final results. Expanded courses also include specialized curriculum to teach critical thinking, and reviewing and presentation design. We have also worked with science festivals, high schools, and journalists to test workshop results during or immediately after the workshop.
Fees
Fees are based on the number of participants and workshop duration, plus travel expenses (airfare, ground transport, and accommodation as necessary). Please contact us for more information.
